DURHAM, N.C.?Duke University senior goalkeeper Brendan Fitzgerald was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week the league office announced today. This is Fitzgerald's first career weekly award and the second for the Blue Devils this season.
Fitzgerald turned in a pair of strong performances in posting two shutouts in a 2-0 week for the Blue Devils. He made two stops at Elon as Duke captured a 2-0 victory over the Phoenix. Four days later he anchored the Blue Devils' defensive effort in a 1-0 win overtime win over No. 19 Virginia. Fitzgerald posted his seventh shutout of the season against the Cavaliers despite Duke playing a man down for the final 40 minutes.
Prior to his two shutout performances last week, Fitzgerald helped hold top-ranked Wake Forest scoreless. The Demon Deacons had the highest scoring offense heading into the contest, but were unable to get on the scoreboard for the first time since Oct. 27, 2007.
For the year, Fitzgerald is 8-5-2 with a 0.73 goals against average and an .817 save percentage. He ranks second in the ACC in save percentage, saves (49), and shutouts (7).
