DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke men's and women's swimming and diving teams will get a chance to gauge their off-season progress when the squads compete tomorrow, Oct. 4, in the annual Blue and White Meet at Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion.
Tomorrow's intra-squad dual meet is the culmination of a full week of team events and training sessions, with the meet's lineups determined by the team captains to provide a taste of early competition.
“We have been pleased with our first couple of training cycles this season and feel we are definitely ahead of where we were a year ago,” said head coach Dan Colella. “I would expect there to be some pretty solid swims this Saturday.”
The men's team is captained by Ryan Packer, Jordan Charles, and Justin Mullen, while the women are led by Emily Kelly, Katie Bieze, and Lauren Gonzalez.
“The captains are in charge of their respective team lineups, so I really don't know what people will be swimming,” added Colella. “But, I know our captains and they are extremely competitive, so it should be a great meet.”
The Blue Devil men are coming off a 3-7 (0-5 ACC) finish in 2007-08, and a ninth-place finish at the ACC Championships. The women were 8-4 (2-2 ACC) and took sixth at the conference meet.
The teams will officially kick off the 2008-09 season with a road meet at UNC-Wilmington on Sat., Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. The following weekend, the squads open the home slate as the men host Miami and the women host both Miami and Campbell at Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.
