DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke swimming and diving teams will look to continue their perfect start to the 2008-09 seasons when they face ACC rivals Maryland and N.C. State this weekend. Both squads will compete Fri., Oct. 31 at N.C. State's Casey Natatorium beginning at 6 p.m., with the meet set to continue Sat., Nov. 1 at Duke in the Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion at 1 p.m.
The totals of both days of competition will be added together to determine the overall winners of the meet.
The Blue Devil men will be taking the pool for the first time since defeating UNC-Wilmington on Oct. 18, as they come into the weekend at 1-0. The women have an additional week of competition under the belts, as they also defeated UNCW and then beat both Miami and Campbell last weekend to improve to 3-0 on the young season.
Maryland enters the weekend with each team sitting at 1-0 on the season, after the men defeated Johns Hopkins 167-105 and the women 185-95 last Friday.
The N.C. State men's team is 2-1, splitting a meet against West Virginia and Virginia Tech its last time out. The Wolfpack women's squad is 3-1, also splitting last weekend's meet.
Duke is off to a fast start so far this season, as it set eight pool records in the first meet and three more last weekend. Freshman diver Abby Johnston also broke Duke's school record in the one-meter dive with her score of 322.48 against UNCW. Three divers ? Julie Brummond, Jessica Lyden, and Cody Kolodziejzyk have already reached their NCAA Zone qualifying cuts after just two meets.
After this weekend, the Blue Devils will have a brief hiatus until they compete in the Nike Cup Invitational in Columbia, S.C., from Nov. 20-22.
