PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.?The third-ranked pair of Melissa Mang and Amanda Granson moved one step closer to the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship final round today with a victory in the quarterfinal round. Also in action in the main draw of the consolation singles competition were Ellah Nze, Reka Zsilinszka, and Tara Iyer.
Mang and Granson kicked of the action in the morning with an 8-6 win over the No. 5 duo of Meghan Alexander and Marrit Boonstra of Florida. They will take on Georgia Tech's Amanda McDowell and Irina Falconi in the semifinal round after they upset the top-ranked pair from Fresno State. Mang and Granson is the lone seeded doubles pair to advance to the semifinal round in the main draw.
In the consolation singles bracket of the main draw, Nze, Zsilinszka, and Iyer took on foes from Southern California, LSU, and Baylor, respectively. Iyer was the lone winner on the afternoon, defeating the Bears' Lenka Broosova. The 60th-ranked Iyer defeated eighth-ranked Broosova, 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinal round of the consolation bracket. Iyer's magical run of the week ended there as she lost a tough three-set match to No. 25 Julia Cohen of Miami, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Nze took on fifth-ranked Amanda Fink of Southern Call and fell 6-7 (4-7), 5-7. Zsilinszka lost her consolation match to No. 15 Megan Falcon from LSU 6-2, 6-4 to finish the weeklong tennis tournament.
Granson, who also remained in the consolation bracket of the qualifying singles competition, advanced to the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over No. 65 Bojana Bobusic. Granson's bid for a singles title ended in the next match as she fell to 71st-ranked Maria Sanchez of Southern California, 6-2, 6-2.
Mang and Granson are back in action tomorrow, Oct. 4, at 1:30 p.m.
