PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.?Duke University duo Melissa Mang and Amanda Granson had their run through the Riviera/ITA All-American Women's Tennis Championship ended yesterday with a loss in the semifinal round at the Riviera Tennis Club.
Third-ranked Mang and Granson fell in a tough two-set match to the No. 30 team of Irina Falconi and Amanda McDowell of Georgia Tech, 6-2, 7 -5. Falconi and McDowell advanced to the main draw through the qualifying rounds and upset the top-seeded pair from Fresno State to move into the semifinal round against Mang and Granson.
"Melissa and Amanda had a great tournament," head coach Jamie Ashworth said. "The best thing for them was they were able to beat a very good team from Stanford and Florida's top team who they lost to last year. They showed they can be on of the teams in the country this week."
Mang and Granson's run through the main draw included dominant wins over the No. 5 pair from Stanford and the sixth-ranked team from Florida. The Blue Devils dispatched those teams, 8-2 and 8-6, respectively.
Granson and Tara Iyer also had strong runs through singles competition. Granson advanced to the qualifying consolation singles semifinal and Iyer made it through to the quarterfinal round of the main draw consolation round. Both players defeated highly ranked players during the week.
"Tara and Amanda both had great weeks," Ashworth said. "Amanda played some great matches. I think she had more ranked wins in a week than she's had in her career. Tara played very well and beat some of the top players in the country as well and for her to pick up quality wins was really good."
"I wish singles would have done better, but we didn't take any bad losses," Ashworth said. "As a whole though we have to be able to take advantage of opportunities presented to us. It's definitely something we can build on and when we play again we will be better because of the competition we faced here."
The Blue Devils will take a couple of weeks off from action before hitting the courts again for the ITA Regional Championship in Winston Salem, N.C. That event kicks off on Oct. 23.
