COLUMBUS, Ohio ? The Duke diving team turned in its second successful day of competition at the Ohio State Invitational Saturday afternoon, with the men's team taking part in the three-meter and the women on the one-meter board at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of the Buckeyes.
For the women, freshman Abby Johnston bettered yesterday's third-place finish in the finals of the three-meter, as she took second this evening on the one-meter behind Olympian Kelci Bryant of Miami, while placing ahead of the third-place finisher Christina Loukas of Indiana ? who also competed this summer at the Olympic Games in Beijing. Johnston's one-meter score of 310.5 in tonight's finals was another NCAA Zone Qualifier and her third-highest point total of the season in the event.
“Abby did really well today ? very consistent,” said diving coach Drew Johansen. “It was another good day for us.”
Also for the women, freshman Jessica Lyden joined Johnston in the finals, where she totaled a 253.20 to take eighth overall in the strong field.
On the men's side, Cody Kolodziejzyk narrowly missed advancing to the finals with a total of 313.20 in this afternoon's preliminaries of the three-meter in his first collegiate invitational. That mark was just a point off his season-best.
The Blue Devils close competition tomorrow with the platform dive, where Julie Brummond and Shawn Hoffman will represent Duke. The finals-only event begins at noon, and live scoring is available via www.OhioStateBuckeyes.com.
