MALIBU, Calif. ? Junior Amanda Granson cruised to a straight set win in her third prequalifying match on Sunday to advance into the qualifying rounds of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
Granson, who is from Hilton Head, S.C., needed to defeat a ranked opponent to stay in the tournament. She faced No. 97 Jelena Stanivuk of Baylor in the third round of prequalifying and controlled the match from start to finish, dominating the match for a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
"Amanda played really well,” said head coach Jamie Asheworth. “I told her after that match that it was one of the best matches she has ever played mentally. She went in to the match playing to advance and she played for every point no matter what her opponent did.”
Granson will join two of her teammates in the first round of qualifying on Tuesday. Tara Iyer and Elizabeth Plotkin were automatically placed in qualifying. Iyer is ranked No. 60 in the nation and will face Beier Ko of Harvard. Plotkin is ranked No. 44 and will be playing her first match since February when she suffered a season-ending knee injury against Northwestern. She will take on Jennifer Stevens of Virginia in the first round.
Iyer and Jessi Robinson were eliminated in doubles in prequalifying on Sunday. The Duke pair suffered a loss to Georgia's Naoko Ueshima and Cameron Ellis, 8-2.
The qualifying rounds will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
