PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.?Duke University junior Tara Iyer captured a pair of victories today in the Riviera/ITA All-American Women's Tennis Championships qualifying round at the Riviera Tennis Club. Five Blue Devils competed today in the first of two days of qualifying for the main draw of the championship tournament. Eight individuals and four doubles teams will move on to the main draw on Oct. 2-5.
“Overall it was a good day for us,” head coach Jamie Ashworth said. “One of the best things today was that it was great to get Liz [Plotkin] back on the court. She hasn't played since last February after a torn ACL and it is great for our program to have her back out there.”
Tara Iyer grabbed Duke's first win of the day, breezing past Beier Ko of Harvard 6-1, 6-0. Iyer came back in the afternoon and dispatched Baylor's Csilla Borsanyi, 6-0, 6-3 to move one step closer to the main draw. She will take on Michaela Kissell of Miami in the round of 16 tomorrow.
After advancing through the pre-qualifying round over the weekend, Amanda Granson narrowly lost to Irina Falconi of Georgia Tech in three sets. Falconi edged Granson, who was playing her fourth match in as many days, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Granson captured a big victory in a consolation match as she defeated Lauren Liu from Northwestern 6-4, 6-3.
“Amanda also played well today,” Ashworth said. “She lost her first match, but came back and had the highest ranked win she's ever had in her career at Duke. Overall I am very please in how the day went.”
Elizabeth Plotkin rounded out Duke's singles players in the bottom part of the draw. Playing for the first time since February, Plotkin battled, but eventually fell to Virginia's Jennifer Stevens 6-1, 2-6, 6-4
In doubles action Ellah Nze and Reka Zsilinska fell to Megan Falcon and Mykala Hedberg of LSU, 8-4 in the first round.
Iyer and Granson both play tomorrow at the Riviera Tennis Club. A win for Iyer would qualify her for the main draw over the weekend.
