DURHAM, N.C.?Duke University senior Melissa Mang captured her second singles victory of the weekend today at the Michigan Invitational. Mang is 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles action through two days of the three-day tournament. The Blue Devils finished 3-4 overall in matches today.
Duke opened the day with a pair of doubles matches against No. 24 Tennessee and finished the afternoon off with singles play against 19th-ranked Michigan.
Sophomore Reka Zsilinszka captured a win for the Blue Devils at No. 3 singles, getting past Tania Mahtani 7-5, 6-2. The No. 56 player in the nation, Zsilinszka improved her 2008-09 record to 10-5 overall.
Mang breezed past her Wolverine competitor Whitney Taney, 6-3, 6-2 to win her 11th match of the season and 82nd of her career. Also winning for the Blue Devils on day two was senior Jessie Robinson in the No. 5 singles slot. The Rehoboth Beach, Del. native captured the 6-4, 6-2 win over Michigan's Kari Wig.
Sophomore Ellah Nze lined up in the No. 1 spot for Duke, dropping a tough contest, 7-6 (10-3), 6-4. It was Nze's first loss in the past four matches and takes her record to 8-4 overall. The Wolverines also grabbed a win in second singles as Rika Tatsuno upset junior Amanda Granson 6-3, 6-2.
Mixing things up on the doubles side, Granson and Robinson joined forces against Rosalia Alda and Maria Sorbello. Ranked ninth in the Southeast Region, the Volunteer duo dispatched Granson and Robinson 8-3. The result proved to be much of the same for Duke's Mang and Zsilinszka against Tennessee's tandem of Jennifer Meredith and Natalie Pluskota. The seventh-ranked pair in the region, Meredith and Pluskota earned the 8-4 win for the Volunteers.
The Blue Devils close out play at the Michigan Invitational on Jan. 19 at 9 a.m., against Vanderbilt in singles. Duke finishes the day against the host Wolverines in doubles at 12 p.m.
