Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie
Opening Statement:
"Overall, a good, physical game. I thought it was an interesting game for us. I thought that we had some really dominant moments that were great and some inconsistent moments. I like 23 offensive rebounds. I don't like 21 turnovers. We need to learn to share the ball a little bit better in the sense of creating assists. I thought that Joy (Cheek) was absolutely stellar in her game in terms of rebounding, hacking, and being very aggressive. Not to mention, an incredible block down the stretch there that was very key. I thought that Allison (Vernerey) was very competitive and hard as well, getting her rebounds and attacking. We got better tonight and now we get to go play some more games somewhere else."
On shooting percentage
"You have to always give credit. I would like to say that we need to focus a little more and slow down and be patient. I thought that there were a lot of shots to be had, but you have to give credit to a scrappy game and a scrappy defense by Charlotte."
On top priorities for upcoming games
"Well, we get to do a replay with Western Kentucky. We have played them before. We didn't exactly play well. We played well enough to win that game. They have their entire team back and that is an exciting opportunity for us to play Western Kentucky. That is the game that we are focused on right now. In terms of getting better, more assists. We have got to get better. We have to share the ball more, move the ball, and show some patience. I thought we did in the second half a fair amount. Overall, what I liked about this game was that the defense was there. And, the defense is going to need to be there. We need to show up our defenses, and build our tempo and chemistry on offense."
On free throw average
"I think that we are an excitable team, and we are excited and getting better. I think we need to learn to bring it down a notch for free throws as well as for open shots. A lot of open jump shots being tossed around out there. I think it is just a matter of time to get into what I call 'true game mode.' We are settling in. That is not a pleasant stat."
