WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-After a successful opening day of action, the Duke University women's tennis team hit the courts again for the second day of the Wake Forest Fall Invitational. The Blue Devils played two rounds of singles and one round of doubles and will complete the opening weekend tomorrow at Leighton Stadium.
Kicking off the morning with doubles action, the duo of juniors Reka Zsilinszka and Ellah Nze rolled past the pair of Nadine Fahoum and Diana Ivanova of Old Dominion 8-1 to move into the championship match. They will take on Illinois' Marisa Lambropolous and Breanne Smutko for the title tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
Duke's new pair of senior Amanda Granson and sophomore Monica Gorny got past the tandem of Irina Dementyeva and Juliana Pines 8-3. They will play in the fifth-place match on Sunday morning against Wake Forest's Emilee Malvehy and Kathryn Talbert.
The Blue Devils did not fare quite as well in singles action with three of the five players dropping their opening matches. Top-seeded Zsilinszka continued her dominance, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win over 78th-ranked Leigh Finnegan of Illinois. The victory pushed her to the semifinals where she lost a tough three-set match 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 to Illini freshman Rachael White.
Second-seeded and 19th-ranked Nze suffered a setback in her first match, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 to Martina Pavelec of Wake Forest. She rebounded in her next match, breezing past Davidson's Stephani Synn 6-1, 6-2. Nze will take on Virginia Berry of Davidson in the 13th-place match on Sunday morning.
Granson and Elizabeth Plotkin also fell in their opening singles contests. Similar to Zsilinszka and Nze, Granson battled through a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss to White of Illinois. Old Dominion Fahoum stopped Plotkin 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals to set up a seventh-place match between Granson and Plotkin tomorrow.
Playing in the B Singles flight, Gorny opened the day with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Ivanova before losing to Talbert 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinal round. She will take on Richmond's Helen Cunningham in the third-place match.
