Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie
Opening Statement:
"We had a great team game. Everybody was playing so hard, with so much energy and focus, particularly defensively. We had a great start in an incredibly dominant first half, and I thought it was incredibly dominant in a different way, not so much with the score but just with the intensity we had again in the second half. I was very pleased with the rebounding. 51-30 [rebounds] against a team of that quality is just outstanding. The leadership of [Jasmine Thomas] attacking the basket, moving the ball, and getting her teammates into defense was outstanding. Not to mention her attack when [Florida State] went into zone. Krystal [Thomas] was steady throughout. She had six rebounds at halftime and then five more [in the second half]. She just kept collecting rebounds and was very, very aggressive. I thought she was very dangerous on the inside. I liked a lot of things about this game. We definitely got better as a team, and executed better also."
On keeping Florida State to a low score:
"I think the intensity, the focus, the communication, player-to-player, and the physicality that was dictating the nature of the game. The box-outs were superb in terms of hitting people and pushing back and getting some good box-outs, and limiting a very, very good Florida State team to one shot."
On Jasmine Thomas' leadership in the game:
"Jasmine does that. She is a very dangerous player. She is truly special in that way. [She is] extremely competitive and very focused in what she does. I'm not sure I've coached a more focused player than Jasmine, and that is what you saw out there."
Junior Jasmine Thomas
On the team defense:
"It was really good today and it was aggressive the entire time. I think for the past couple of games our press wasn't doing what we wanted it to do. We weren't getting steals but today got some turnovers and made them take some quick shots and the press worked really well for us."
Junior Krystal Thomas
On Jasmine Thomas' play:
"It's really impressive to see how she turns it on when the team needs her to. She is able to hit shots and they come in bunches. It seems once she gets that first shot she is going to get 10 more. It's just great to have a player that when something happens she is going to come and be ready for it."
Florida State Head Coach Sue Semrau
Opening Statement:
"We just got handled tonight by a team that played more athletic, played harder. That's really all I have to say."
On what Duke does so well defensively:
"They got their hands on the ball and they were all over the place. We missed shots and they rebounded the ball a lot better than we did. They outrebounded us by 21 and got as many offensive rebounds as we did."
On Jasmine Thomas' performance:
"She's playing great. She's a handful in a lot of different ways. But the other people around her are stepping up and I think that is what makes her so much better. Early on she had to do it all herself and now there's a lot of people that are stepping up to help her in a lot of different ways and playing their roles. Teams are really good when players just play their roles."
On preparing for their next game and what they learned from this game:
"I'm not sure yet on either question."
