Duke Sweeps Doubles on Day One at Carolina Regional

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Duke women's tennis team swept all three of its doubles matches on the opening day of the ITA Carolina Regional. The Blue Devils are set to begin regional singles action Friday morning at 11:00 a.m.
The Duke tandem of Mary Clayton and Monica Gorny grabbed their opening match doubles win at the Carolina Regional Thursday by defeating Masha Belaya and Klara Vyskocialova from Clemson by a score of 8-1. The win gives Clayton and Gorny a five match win streak that dates back to Oct. 8, at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, when they ran the table in the doubles consolation bracket. The Blue Devil duo will face off against conference rivals Ashley Miller and Christy Spies from NC State on Friday at 9:00 a.m.
Duke's Reka Zsilinszka and Hanna Mar took down Cayla Cross and Diana Henry from North Carolina A&T in their opening round doubles match by a score of 8-1. The Blue Devil pair picked up their first win as a doubles partners, and advance to the next round to square off against Miki Bunea and Diana Mortlock from College of Charleston on Friday.
The final doubles match for Duke featured the second-seeded duo of Nadine Fahoum and Ellah Nze matching up against conference rivals Joelle Kissell and Chloe Smith from NC State. The Blue Devil twosome picked up the sweep in doubles for Duke by a score of 9-7. Fahoum and Nze are matched up against Haley Hemm and Gina Suarez-Malaguti from North Carolina on Friday at 10:00 a.m.
The Blue Devils will kick-off singles action at the Carolina Regional on Friday, with five players grabbing overall seeds. Duke's Nze was tabbed as the second-seed and is scheduled to dual it out with Emma Hayman from College of Charleston at 5:30 p.m. Fahoum comes in as the fifth-seed and will match up against conference foe Kathryn Talbert from Wake Forest at 1:30 p.m.
Elizabeth Plotkin, Clayton and Mar were all chosen as nine-seeds overall - seeds 9-16 were listed in alphabetical order with all players receiving a seeding of nine - in the singles bracket. Plotkin will face off against Natalie Collins from East Carolina on Friday at 11:00 a.m. Clayton will open her singles play with conference rival Caroline Magnusson from Clemson at 3:00 p.m., and Mar is scheduled to play Laura Slater from UNC at 12:30 p.m. Gorny will begin her regional singles action against ninth-seeded Shinan Featherston from UNC at 4:30 p.m.
Duke will open day two of the Carolina Regional on Friday with doubles at 9:00 a.m., with opening round singles to follow.
