DURHAM, N.C. - Duke senior and member of the Blue Devil swim team, Alessondra Speidel, will be honored at the December 11 men's basketball game during the halftime festivities.
Speidel was recently named one of the 31 recipients of the 2011 Marshall Scholarship. The Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a graduate degree in the United Kingdom. In Speidel's case, after graduation in May, she will be attending Imperial College London.
"I started thinking about applying last spring and spent a lot of time over the summer making contacts and eventually found Dr. Michael Schneider at Imperial College London," said Speidel.
Imperial is one of the top universities in the world, known for its research. A biomedical engineering major, Speidel will be continuing her education in the study of stem cell research and tissue engineering, with a research concentration on the regeneration of dead cardiac tissue.
Speidel's process started last spring when she began making contacts and filing her intent to apply, and by the fall, she had submitted her application and was chosen among thousands of applicants to meet with the New York committee at the British Consulate in New York City.
"The process was very long, but it has been really helpful to reflect on what I want to do with my life and what I have most enjoyed doing," said Speidel. "It's been fun to review my time at Duke through the process and put together a targeted idea of what I want to pursue in the future."
Speidel will be honored at the December 11 men's basketball game against Saint Louis. This is a tickets event. General public doors open at 11 a.m., while student doors open at 10:30 a.m. for the noon tip off.
