"[The third-place match] was a really tough match," head coach Clar Anderson said. "I was very impressive with the way he defended against an opponent who was so much bigger than he was. It was a disappointing way to finish, but he's had a great career here at Duke."
Dudziak closes out his season with an 18-2 overall record and earned All-America honors for the second consecutive season. He became the first wrestler in Duke program history to earn an All-America award when he finished as the national runner-up in 2009. He added a second accolade to the list this season, advancing to the national semifinals before taking fourth overall.
A native of Bayonne, N.J., Dudziak opened the day with a 3-2 decision over No. 11 Mitchell Monteiro of Cal State Bakersfield. Knotted at two heading into the third period, Dudziak escaped to take a 3-2 lead with an escape and held off the senior Roadrunner to earn a spot in the third-place match.
In his final career match, Dudziak was up against No. 3 seed Zachery Rey of Lehigh. After no action in the first period, Rey came up with an escape to the start the second session. He kept that lead heading to the final stanza with Dudziak choosing bottom.
Dudziak matched Rey with an escape to start the third and forced overtime. The pair traded escapes as they headed into the sudden victory second overtime. Dudziak took a shot, but Rey with good defense was able to come back at the Blue Devil senior and get a takedown for the win.
Duke's most decorated wrester in program history, Dudziak closes out his career with a 78-18 overall record. His .813 winning percentage ranks fourth all-time at Duke.
