The loss drops the Blue Devils to 19-6 overall and 7-4 in ACC action. Duke will be the No. 4 seed in the ACC Tournament and will play the winner of the No. 5 vs. No. 12 seed on Friday, April 23 at 9 a.m., at the Cary Tennis Park. Miami improves to 17-4 overall and 10-1 against conference foes.
"I was really pleased with the way we competed," head coach Jamie Ashworth said. "We put ourselves in position to win four or five singles matches after kind of giving away the doubles, so I was happy with how we competed today. I thought we weren't as strong mentally as we needed to be, but just from how we fought and competed, I was happy with that."
The Hurricanes garnered the first point of the match, earning victories on courts one and two in doubles play. The tandem of Monica Gorny and Mary Clayton went up with an early break, but the 53rd-ranked duo from Miami came back and cruised to the 8-3 victory. On court one, Duke's pair of Granson and Ellah Nze fought its way back on serve to tie the match 6-6. The sixth-ranked team of Laura Vallverdu and Gabriela Mejia held serve to take a 7-6 lead and was able to break Duke's final service game to clinch the crucial single point.
Singles action was equally as thrilling as the Blue Devils took the first set on five of the six courts. Gorny was the first off the court, cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Claudia Wasilewski. The win was her 15th of the year and pushes her conference record to 5-4 overall.
Granson gave Duke a 2-1 lead in the overall match as she captured her 32nd career ACC singles victory with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Danielle Mills from the No. 4 spot. The native of Hilton Head, S.C., pushed her career ACC singles record to 32-10, surpassing Duke's Melissa Mang for the program record.
"Setting the ACC career record is a great accomplishment and she's brought so much to us on the doubles court as well," Ashworth said. "She's done a great job of learning how to be a doubles player and in singles she's won a ton of matches for us, to the point where we count on her in important situations. She's been pretty rock solid her four years here and has gotten better."
Miami's Bianca Eichkorn evened the match from the No. 2 spot, outlasting Elizabeth Plotkin 6-2, 7-6 (5). The loss was just Plotkin's fourth of the season as she finished the regular season with an 18-4 record in dual matches.
The seesaw battle continued with junior Reka Zsilinszka putting Duke back in front 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the No. 3 spot. The win was her 11th straight and kept her ACC record unblemished at 10-0.
The drama continued to build with Duke holding a 3-2 lead in the overall match and the final two matches on courts one and five going into third sets. On court one, Vallverdu dropped the first set after Duke's Nze posted a furious comeback to win the first set 7-6 (5). The Hurricane senior responded by taking the second set and forcing a third and decisive set. At No. 5, Clayton was in a similar situation after she took the first set 6-4 over Mejia.
Both Vallverdu and Mejia garnered early leads, going up 4-1 in the third sets. Mejia rode that wave of momentum and outlasted Clayton 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to tie the match 3-3.
The deciding match came down to court one with Nze and Vallverdu. After the Hurricanes opened a 4-1 lead in the third set, Nze rallied to make it a 4-3 contest. However Vallverdu would not let the Blue Devil junior back into the set as she clinched the win for the Hurricanes with a 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4 victory.
The official pairings for the upcoming ACC Tournament will be announced this week. The tournament runs from April 22-25 at the Cary Tennis Park.
