ATLANTA, Ga. - Two former Blue Devils recently competed at the U.S. Master's Swimming Short Course National Championships, notching first-place finishes in several events. Holden Bank and Kristin Gary were joined by Duke alumnus Jonathan Silver at the three-day event, held at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center on May 20-23.
A member of the men's swim team from 1977-81, Bank competed in five events at the U.S. Master's National Championships. He captured first in his age group in the 50-yard breaststroke, posting a time of 26.98. Bank also took second in the 100 IM (56.15), fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.64) and sixth in both the 100 freestyle (49.65) and 200 free (1:50.66).
Gary took home three wins in her age group at the recent meet, finishing first in the 100-yard backstroke (58.24), 200 backstroke (2:05.61) and the 100 butterfly (59.44). She also finished second in both the 50 back (27.83) and the 100 IM (1:02.17). Gary swam for the Blue Devils from 1985-88. In 1986, she took first in the 200 back at the New South Intercollegiate Championships in Durham, N.C., posting a time of 2:10.16.
A graduate of Duke, Silver recorded his highest finish of the meet in the 400 IM, in which he took 14th with a time of 6:02.35. Silver also finished 16th in his age group in the 200 IM (2:44.41), 22nd in the 100 fly (1:12.70) and 26th in the 50 fly (30.53).
In addition, Bank has plans to swim across the English Chunnel later this month with a relay team of five other individuals. His team, the "Mile High Channel Toppers," will attempt to cross the 21-mile channel at the end of June with the goal of raising money for various charitable organizations. Bank's efforts will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and the Special Olympics.
