DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke diving team hosted an informal meet on Wednesday, Jan. 5 to kick off the start of the winter season with both the divers of N.C. State and UNC Wilmington.
Although no team point values were allotted, the Duke divers grabbed first and second place finishes on both the men's and women's side.
Redshirt sophomore Jessica Lyden made her season debut on the boards after coming off of surgery on both shoulders during the off season, and missing competition in the fall. Lyden grabbed first with a combined score of 298.9 on the boards. The score also landed her an NCAA Zone Qualification.
On the men's side, sophomore Jordan Long grabbed his first top finish of the season with a score of 382.1, while junior Cody Kolodziejzyk grabbed second with a score of 377.4.
Redshirt sophomore Shawn Hoffman managed to grab an NCAA Zone Qualifying score as well, topping 330.95 points in the boards. Hoffman missed off-season training as well due to his own shoulder surgery.
"I am very proud of Jessica and Shawn," said diving coach Drew Johansen. "They both have overcome so much since their freshman year. Jessica had two surgeries and extensive rehab over the last year and a half, and Shawn had one surgery and rehab that took a full year. They both had great days today and I am looking forward to having them back in the lineup this semester."
Both the swimmers and divers will kick off the season on Saturday, Jan. 15 when the Blue Devils face the Gamecocks of South Carolina and Queens University of Charlotte in a 1:00 p.m. match-up at Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion.
