WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Three different Blue Devils scored goals as the seventh-ranked Duke field hockey team earned a 3-0 victory at William & Mary Saturday afternoon from Busch Field. Duke improved to 9-5 (2-2 ACC) overall with the win, while William & Mary slipped to 6-7 on the year.
The Blue Devils outshot the Tribe 18-5, including a 12-0 margin in the second half. Sophomore Emmie Le Marchand finished the day with a goal and an assist, while junior Devon Gagliardi and senior Tara Jennings also tallied goals. Duke, which earned its fifth shutout of the season, also held the advantage in penalty corners 10-2 for the game.
"Today was a really important win for where we are in the season," said head coach Pam Bustin. "We had to fight and find a solution at halftime and we did a great job in the second half of playing our game."
Duke took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute as Le Marchand registered her 12th goal of the season. The Worcester, England, native received the ball at the post, turned and beat the goalkeeper with the shot to give the Blue Devils the one-goal advantage in the first half.
Duke would take the 1-0 lead into halftime after leading William & Mary in both shots (6-5) and penalty corners (5-1) for the period.
The Blue Devils extended their lead to 2-0 midway through the second half. The Williams & Mary goalkeeper saved the initial shot from Jennings on the play, but Gagliardi was there for the rebound, netting her seventh goal of the season.
Four minutes later, Jennings gave Duke a 3-0 lead with a penalty corner shot assisted by Le Marchand and senior Stefanie Fee.
Duke's Virginia road trip continues tomorrow as the Blue Devils face a rematch with No. 1 Old Dominion at 1 p.m., from Norfolk, Va. The Blue Devils and the Lady Monarchs met earlier this season with ODU slipping past Duke 3-2 in double overtime.
