Twichell placed second in the women's 800-meter freestyle final, touching the wall in 8:38.38. Chile's Kristel Kobrich claimed the gold medal with a time of 8:34.71, while Andreina Pinto of Venezuela rounded out the podium in 8:44.55.
The silver medal for Twichell added to the 33 total medals won by U.S. swimmers so far at the international competition - the highest of any country.
The 2011 Duke graduate finished third in the 800 free at the 2011 ConocoPhillips National Championships in August to qualify for the Pan Am Games. An All-American and ACC champion during her career at Duke, Twichell claimed a pair of medals in open water swimming earlier this summer at the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China.
The silver medal performance rounds out a week in which Twichell was named the recipient of the Fran Crippen Elevation Foundation's first annual "Work the Dream" Grant and nominated for the USA Swimming Foundation's Breakout Performer of the Year Golden Goggle Award. Fans can vote for Twichell at USA Swimming's website: http://www.usaswimming.org.
Swimming events at the 2011 Pan American Games run through Friday, Oct. 21.
