PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - The Duke women's tennis team began the qualifying rounds of the 2011 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Tuesday morning, as three Blue Devils competed in the first round of singles qualifiers and three pairs of doubles took to the courts.
In the singles draw, the day began with a little surprise as sophomore Hanna Mar, who fell in the pre-qualifying finals, earned an alternate bid into the qualifying draw. However, the Burr Ridge, Ill. native and two other Blue Devils could not advance past the first round. Mar was downed by Georgia's Maho Kowase, 6-4, 6-0, while junior Mary Clayton lost a tough match despite winning the first set against St. Marys' Catherine Isip, a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 decision. Sophomore Rachel Kahan was outlasted in a hard-fought match against Northwestern's Kate Turvy who won 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Doubles play was the brightest note of the day for the Blue Devils, as the freshmen duo of Beatrice Capra and Ester Goldfeld notched an 8-3 victory over Texas Tech's Samantha Adams and Nikki Sanders. Unfortunately, Duke's two other doubles pairs could not match the success of Capra and Goldfeld. Senior Monica Gorny and Kahan teamed up against California's Annie Goransson and Tayler Davis, but were defeated by an 8-5 count, while Clayton and Mar lost an 8-6 decision to Southern California's Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria.
The final day of the qualifying rounds of tournament begins tomorrow, as Capra and Goldfeld are just two wins away from earning a spot in the main draw. They will meet Georgia's Kate Fuller and Lauren Herring in tomorrow's semifinal matchup.
Eight players from the singles draw and four doubles teams from the doubles draw will earn the right to compete in the main draws of the event. Main draw play will take place over four days, beginning on Oct. 6.
