PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - After a rain-marred Wednesday, the Duke women's tennis team entered the final day of qualifying and the first round of the main draw at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships with just one pair of doubles left in the qualifying draw, despite no remaining players in the qualifying singles draw. One Blue Devil made the most of the day, scoring a huge upset in the opening round of the main draw.
In just her first collegiate dual singles match, freshman Beatrice Capra stole the show at the Riviera Country Club with a major upset in the first round of the main draw, defeating Stanford's Nicole Gibbs 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Gibbs was a 2011 NCAA semifinalist and is ranked No. 7 in the nation. Capra will take on Southern California's Danielle Lao in the round of 16 beginning tomorrow.
After a bit of rescheduling, junior Mary Clayton outlasted Utah's Callie Craig 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 in the first round of the singles qualifying consolation bracket. She is slated to meet Keri Wong from ACC rival Clemson in the quarterfinals of the flight in the quarterfinals.
Capra and classmate Ester Goldfeld opened up the day with an 8-6 doubles qualifying win over Georgia's fourth-seeded Kate Fuller and Lauren Herring. The tandem's five-match winning streak that began in the prequalifying rounds last Saturday ended in the quarterfinals in an 8-5 loss to UCLA's fifth-seeded Courtney Dolehide and Pamela Montez.
In the doubles qualifying consolation bracket, Clayton and sophomore Hanna Mar teamed up to roll over Louisiana State's Kaitlin Burns and Whitney Wolf in an 8-2 decision. The duo will take on Illinois' Rachael White and Marisa Lambropoulos in the consolation bracket championship.
