PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - On the second day of main draw competition at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, the Duke women's tennis team's week-long run came to an end, but freshman Beatrice Capra displayed flashes of great things to come.
Capra began the day after earning her first collegiate dual singles victory the day before - a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 triumph over seventh-ranked Nicole Gibbs of Stanford. First up on Friday, the Ellicott City, Md. native took on Southern California's Danielle Lao, the No. 16 ranked player in nation. Capra won the first set 6-3, but dropped the second set 3-6. In the third and final set, Capra cruised, closing out Lao by a 6-1 count to advance to the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Capra met yet another highly-ranked opponent. This time it was the nation's No. 2 overall player: the Florida Gators' Allie Will. Will, a member of Florida's 2011 National Championship team, gave Capra all she could handle, defeating the freshman 6-2, 6-4 to end her run through the main draw.
Despite the setback, Capra earned a berth into the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. The tournament will be held Nov. 3-6 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Duke did not participate in any other matches outside of the main draw, Friday.
Up next for the Blue Devils are ITA Regionals, which will take place Oct. 20-24 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
