The day began with a short wait after the pair received a first-round bye into the round of 16, but got underway after their opposition, Oklahoma's Whitney Ritchie and Marie-Pier Huet, defeated Maryland's Ana Belzunca and Welma Luus, 8-6.
Goldfeld and Capra fell behind 4-3 to the Sooners' duo, but never gave up and kept the match close throughout. Both sides split the next six frames, as Oklahoma maintained a one-game advantage at 7-6. The Blue Devils' tandem made a relentless comeback to take the final three tallies and win the match, 9-7.
The victory was the duo's second comeback over a top 10 doubles opponent in its last three matches. Goldfeld and Capra defeated seventh-ranked Kayla Duncan and Kathryn Talbert of Wake Forest at the Carolina Regionals just two weeks ago after trailing 6-2 and facing two match-points.
The Duke pair will face another test Friday when they take on No. 5 Kristy Frilling and Shannon Mathews from Notre Dame in the quarterfinals.
In singles action, Capra took on 14th-ranked Aeriel Ellis from the University of Texas in the first round of the main draw. Seeded sixth in the draw, Capra jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over Ellis before winning the first set 6-3.
In the second set, Ellis jumped out to an early 3-1 lead before Capra fought back to tie the set at four. Ellis went on to take the second set by a 6-4 margin.
Capra could not swing the momentum back in her favor in the third set, falling 6-2. The newcomer will play in the consolation draw on Friday.
The annual Kitty Harrison Invitational begins Friday, Nov. 4 in Chapel Hill, N.C. Five Blue Devils will compete in the tournament, which will be played in a team format. In the event of inclement weather, matches will also be played in the Sheffield Tennis Center on Duke's campus.
