FLUSHING, N.Y./CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Duke freshman Beatrice Capra continued play in the singles consolation draw Saturday at the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, while five other Blue Devils competed in the annual Kitty Harrison Invitational at the University of North Carolina.
Capra began the day with a quarterfinal consolation singles match against 89th-ranked Samantha Vickers from Tulsa. The newcomer did not have any trouble with Vickers, defeating her in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, to advance to the semifinals later in the day.
Capra, and Ellicott City, Md. native, met Texas A&M's Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar in the semifinals, who was coming off of a hard-fought, three-set victory in the quarterfinals. Capra started fast and kept all of the momentum for the duration of the match, cruising to a 6-2, 6-4 win and advancing to tomorrow's consolation final. Ranked the No. 1 in the preseason newcomer rankings, Capra will take on UCLA's Robin Anderson, the nation's second-ranked freshman.
Duke also resumed play at the Kitty Harrison Invitational, where the Blue Devils began the day with two doubles matches against Marshall. Sophomore Hanna Mar and freshman Annie Mulholland teamed up for a 9-8 victory over Kara Kucin and Karyln Timko, despite junior Mary Clayton and senior Monica Gorny falling 8-5 to Dominika Zaprazna and Maria Voscekova,
The Blue Devils also competed against Furman and ACC rival North Carolina in singles matches. Against Furman, Duke swept the Paladins in all five singles matches, as freshman Monica Turewicz defeated Lauren Kline, 6-3, 6-3, Mar defeated Margaret Boyette, 6-3, 6-2, and Mulholland defeated Alex Moreno-Kaste, 6-4, 6-1. Clayton outlasted Michele Stanford, 6-1, 6-1, while Gorny made quick work of Kelly Sullivan, 6-1, 6-0.
In the second series of singles matches for the day, Duke took on North Carolina despite several matches being abbreviated. Mar was able to take down Tessa Lyons in two, hard-earned sets, 7-6(3), 7-5. In the other complete match, Mulholland fell 6-2, 6-1 to Jennifer Stone.
The three shortened matches were all decided in the first game of the third set. Clayton claimed a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0(6) decision over No. 6 Zoe De Bruycker, Turewicz downed Caroline Price, 1-6, 6-0, 1-0(1), and Gorny defeated Haley Hemm 6-1, 2-6, 1-0(4).
The Blue Devils will conclude the Kitty Harrison Invitational tomorrow in Chapel Hill.
