ROUEN, France - Duke University freshman Beatrice Capra finished her weekend at the Master'U BNP Paribas tournament by helping the United States in claiming its second tournament crown in three years. Each team consisted of six players and played a seven-match format consisting of two men's and two women's singles matches, one men's and one women's doubles match and one mixed doubles match.
The tournament began Friday, Dec. 9, with the U.S. team defeating Germany 6-1. Capra and the University of Florida's Lauren Embree teamed up in doubles to take down Tina Zimmerman and Jessica Homberg, 6-1, 6-3. The Ellicott City, Md. native later outlasted Zimmerman 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in singles, while the rest of the U.S. squad, consisting of both men's and women's players, did its job to preserve the victory.
On Saturday, the U.S. shut out Belgium, 7-0, to clinch a spot in Sunday's championship match. Capra competed in doubles with Embree, picking up a decisive 8-1 win over Celine Rolly and Galley De Wael.
In Sunday's championship match, the U.S. went head-to-head with France for the third straight year. The U.S. defeated the French in 2009, but France countered with a win over the Americans in 2010.
Despite the French taking three of the four singles matches, the U.S. was able to set the tone early in taking all three doubles matches. Capra and Embree downed Nelly Ciolkowski and Anais Van Cauter, 7-5, 6-0 to boost the U.S. Ciolkowski, a native of Neuilly-Plaisance, France, is a member of Clemson's women's tennis team.
Capra dropped her singles bout, 6-3, 6-2, to Nathalie Piquion. Clinching the 4-3 win and tournament title for the U.S. was the University of Georgia's Wil Spencer - the only member of the team to win a singles match in the dual competition, with a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 victory over Sebastien Rocher.
Along with Capra, Embree and Spencer, Arizona State's Jacqueline Cako, Virginia's Jarmere Jenkins, and Southern California's Daniel Nguyen rounded out the U.S. roster. The women's squad was coached by Virginia's Mark Guilbeau, while the men's team was headed by Boise State's Greg Patton for the second consecutive year.
