DURHAM, N.C. - Alexis Jones, who has signed to play women's basketball at Duke beginning in the fall of 2012, has been selected one of seven named to the Naismith High School players of the year preseason watch list.
Jones, who is out of Irving, Texas, is a senior at MacArthur H.S. The 5-8 guard was a 2011 ESPN HoopGurlz and ESPN Rise Underclass All-America selection, after averaging 22.3 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, 4.5 steals and 7.2 assists as a junior. She was named the Gatorade Texas Girls Basketball Player of the Year last year as a well.
Others on the preseason lists are Breanna Stewart, Moriah Jefferson, Jewell Loyd, Jordan Adams, Morgan Tuck and Diamond DeShields.
She led MacArthur to the Class 5A state championship and an overall record of 37-2 during her junior season. Jones was voted the Texas Class 5A Tournament MVP and to the All-Tournament team after notching a triple-double of 25 points, 11 rebounds and 14 assists in the 2011 state championship game. She owns 14 double-doubles and five triple-doubles over her career.
Over the last two summers, Jones has led USA Basketball to gold medals. Jones guided the U19 National Team to an 8-1 record and the gold medal in Puerto Montt, Chile, this past summer as she played in all nine contests. In the summer of 2010, Jones played for the U18 National Team and helped lead them to a 5-0 record and the gold medal. She started all five games and averaged 8.2 points along with 6.4 rebounds.
The players were selected by basketball journalists from around the country, who form the Naismith Awards national voting academy. The selections were based on player performances last season and expectations for the 2011-12 campaign. One male and one female ultimately will be selected as winners, and they will be recognized by the Atlanta Tipoff Club at its season-ending Naismith Awards Banquet on March 22 at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta.
