Wrestling begins January 1 at 10 a.m. and runs through the finals at 6 p.m., January 2. To purchase tickets for The Southern Scuffle call our ticket sales number at UTC McKenzie Arena Ticket Office at 423-266-6627. Tickets are $5 for students and youth and $15 for adults.
The tournament features 22 teams, including four ranked among the top 11 nationally. Reigning national champion Penn State headlines the field, while NCAA runner-up Cornell looks to repeat as the Southern Scuffle champion.
The 2012 Southern Scuffle will be the season debut for redshirt junior Diego Bencomo. The Phoenix native did not compete during the first semester of action and is looking to earn a second consecutive berth in the NCAA Championship field at 184 pounds. He posted a 27-16 record last season and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinal round.
Overall 15 Blue Devils will wrestle in the prestigious tournament as they gear up for the dual match season. Redshirt freshman Brandon Gambucci leads the way for Duke heading into the tournament with a 14-5 overall record at 133 pounds. He last captured top honors at the Davidson Open and looks to place for the fifth time this year as he goes up against Tanner Bidelspach of Campbell in his opening bout.
At 125 pounds, redshirt junior Peter Terrezza owns a 12-6 overall record. He will open the tournament against Zach Zimmer of Indiana. Chris Mullen, who is coming off of his first career tournament title, and freshman Tanner Hough will compete in the 141-pound division. Hough is 11-2 overall on the year, while Mullen is 6-4.
AJ Guardado hopes to add to his win total at 149 pounds, while freshman Marcus Cain will compete unattached in the weight class. Cain is off to a great start with a 16-2 overall record and a pair of top two finishes.
Sporting a 15-5 overall record, redshirt freshman Immanuel Kerr-Brown will make the jump up to 157 pounds after going 10-4 in the 149-pound division. Kerr-Brown competed at 157 pounds at the Davidson Open, taking third overall. He opens the day against Alex Medved of Gardner-Webb. Freshman Andrew DeHart will be unattached at 157 pounds.
Sophomore Ryan Harding will lead Duke at 165 pounds, while freshman Randy Roden anchors the 174-pound lineup. Harding is 12-8 overall, while Roden sports a 10-7 mark.
Rounding out Duke's lineup are sophomore Brian Self at 197 pounds and senior Andrew Fulk and freshman Michael Chapman at heavyweight. Self is back on the mat for the first time since November 20, while Fulk is wrestling in just his second tournament after suffering an early season injury. Chapman is 11-8 overall and will wrestle unattached.
Duke will travel to The Citadel for its next competition, January 6, at 7 p.m.
