IOWA CITY, IOWA - The Duke divers finished the first events of the men's and women's synchronized contest on Tuesday at the 2011 USA Winter National Diving Championships.
After grabbing first in the preliminary round of the men's synchronized 10-meter platform, Nick McCrory and partner David Boudia sealed their victory grabbing the first national title of the championships.
After a terrific showing in the preliminaries, Abby Johnston and partner Christina Loukas were edged out by just .21 points in the women's synchronized 3-meter springboard event to take home second.
In addition to the 10 national titles that will be claimed, the Winter Nationals are being used to select divers for upcoming international meets. The top two synchronized diving teams, based on cumulative scores from the preliminaries and finals, are selected to go to the AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. this spring.
McCrory and Johnston will take to the boards again on Friday, competing individually on the 10-meter platform and the 3-meter springboard. Preliminaries will be held on Friday, and the national titles will be awarded on Sunday's final day of competition.
