After upsetting the No. 6 seed in the second round of the championships, Bencomo met up with No. 3 seed Steve Bosak of top-ranked Cornell. Bosak controlled the match en route to the 15-0 technical fall. Bosak came into the contest as a two-time NCAA qualifier and entered the tournament with a 35-3 overall record.
Bencomo became the second Blue Devil all-time to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinal after upsetting No. 6 Ryan Loder of Northern Iowa. He dominated the match with Loder and held off a late charge for the 12-10 decision.
After falling to Bosak, Bencomo went on to the consolation round to face sixth-ranked Joe LeBlanc of Wyoming. LeBlanc and Bencomo traded points in the first period with the Cowboys redshirt junior holding a narrow 5-4 edge after three minutes of action.
With LeBlanc down to start the second session, he garnered a quick escape to make it a 6-4 match and he went on to take over the match with a takedown and a two-point near fall for a 10-4 edge. Bencomo was able to score on an escape and a reversal to get on the board in the second period but it was LeBlanc that started to pull away with a 13-7 advantage heading into the final period.
LeBlanc continued to pull away in the third period as Bencomo closed out his memorable season. The Phoenix native finishes with a 27-15 overall record and went 4-3 against top-20 foes. His 27 wins are the most in his career and pushes his career total to 48 in two seasons.
