RALEIGH, N.C. – The third-ranked Duke women's tennis team downed crosstown rival N.C. State 6-1 on Friday afternoon at Pullen Park to pick up its second ACC win of the season.
The Blue Devils (10-2, 2-0 ACC) opened their second ACC match of the year winning two out of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point for the second consecutive match.
Mary Clayton and Monica Gorny continued their stellar doubles play this season with another win in the number three double spot 8-2, over Tanvi Shah and Ashley Miller from N.C. State. Duke clinched the doubles point when Ellah Nze and Rachel Kahan picked up their second win in a row. Nze and Kahan took down the undefeated Wolfpack duo of Lenka Hojckova and Tatiana Illova 8-4, to give the Blue Devils an early 1-0 lead.
The 11th-ranked pair of Sanaa Bhambri and Sandhya Nagaraj from N.C. State won the last remaining doubles match on the day. Nadine Fahoum and Hanna Mar took an early 5-4 lead, before falling in a tiebreaker 8-7.
In singles action Duke jumped to early leads winning four out of six first sets. Clayton gave the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead when she walked off the courts first for the second consecutive match. Clayton, the No. 55 singles player, picked up a straight set win 6-0, 6-1, that gave Christy Sipes her first loss in the dual match season.
Kahan was next to walk off the courts for Duke after she picked up her 12th straight win to improve to a perfect 10-0 record in the dual match season. Kahan downed Joelle Kissell from the No. 4 spot in the line-up in straight sets by a score of 6-3, 6-1.
N.C. State would grab a point in the match from Bhambri who defeated Nze 7-6, (7-1), 6-2, to put the score at 3-1, with three matches remaining.
Duke would clinch its second ACC win this season when Fahoum ended her four match losing streak with a straight set win over Nagaraj 6-4, 6-3.
With two matches remaining on courts five and two, Reka Zsilinszka and Elizabeth Plotkin would both pick up wins for Duke. Zsilinszka defeated Hojckova 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-1), while Plotkin picked up her fifth straight win 7-5, 7-5 over Illova.
