DURHAM, N.C. – The fourth-ranked Duke women's tennis team swept Virginia Tech 7-0, on Saturday afternoon in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
Duke (16-2, 5-0 ACC) opened the match with a sweep of doubles to claim its eighth straight doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. The No. 72 duo of Mary Clayton and Monica Gorny rolled through the opening doubles match claiming an 8-2 over Shannon Betts and Katie Blow.
Ellah Nze and Rachel Kahan battled back from a 6-1 deficit on court one to clinch the doubles point in a tiebreaker over Yasmin Hamza and Holly Johnson 9-8 (7-5). In the final match on court two, Nadine Fahoum and Hanna Mar picked up the sweep in doubles action with a 9-7 win over Martha Blakely and Courtney Rauscher.
Duke took the momentum from doubles into singles and won the first set in all six matches. Kahan was the first off the courts for the Blue Devils as she picked up her 18th consecutive win with a straight set win over Isel Martinez-Marcos 6-2, 6-2. Elizabeth Plotkin grabbed the third point for Duke on court four with another straight set decision over Betts as Plotkin has now won 11 matches in a row.
With four matches remaining, Gorny clinched the match win for Duke on court six as she picked up her first conference win of the season. Gorny took down Emily Lauten in straight sets 6-4, 6-0, in her first match since Jan. 30.
The Blue Devils went on to win the final three matches in straight sets to pick up the sweep. Reka Zsilinszka picked up her 34th career ACC singles win to move into first all-time in Duke history as she took down Johnson on court three 6-2, 6-4. Nze grabbed the sixth point for the Blue Devils with the fifth straight set victory of the day. Nze took down Blakely on court two by a score of6-2, 6-4, while Fahoum sealed the sweep on court one after falling behind 4-1 in the first set. Fahoum got the win for the Blue Devils by a score of 7-6, 6-4, over Hamza.
Duke will take on No. 17 Virginia on Sunday at Ambler Tennis Stadium. First serve is slated for 12 p.m. and admission is free to the public. Live stats and live video will be available on GoDuke.com.
