DURHAM, N.C. – The fourth-ranked Duke women's tennis team took down No. 17 Virginia 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
Duke (17-2, 6-0 ACC) started the match down 1-0 after dropping the doubles point for the first time in eight matches. On court two Ellah Nze and Rachel Kahan left everything they had on court two in an 8-5 loss. Kahan and Nze battled back from down 7-2 to make things interesting but Emily Fraser and Hana Tomljaovic held off the charge to grab the first of three matches.
Mary Clayton and Monica Gorny battled throughout the match with Maria Fucillo and Caryssa Peretz. Clayton and Gorny battled back from down 5-3 and eventually fell to Fucillo and Peretz, that allowed Virginia to take the doubles point.
In the final doubles match, the duo of Nadine Fahoum and Hanna Mar went on to claim a doubles win on court one over Lindsey Hardenbergh and Erin Vierra in hard fought 8-6 victory.
The Blue Devils opened singles winning the first set in five out of six matches after dropping the doubles point. Elizabeth Plotkin was first off the courts for Duke with a straight set win on court four over Tomljanovic 6-2, 6-4, that evened the score at 1-1.
The Cavaliers took a 2-1 lead after Hardenbergh took down Fahoum on court one in straight sets 6-3, 6-1, while Reka Zsilinszka evened the score at 2-2 with a straight set win on court three over Vierra.
Clayton capitalized on court six to put the Blue Devils on top 3-2 with her eighth straight win, as she took down Maria Fucillo in straight sets by a score of 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.
With two matches remaining on courts five and two, Nze clinched the match win for Duke after battling back from down 4-1 in the second set to claim the 7-5, 6-4, win over Fraser. In the final match of the afternoon, Kahan eventually took down Peretz in three sets by a score of 6-2, 1-6, 7-5. With the win, Kahan remains undefeated at 17-0 on the season.
Up next, Duke will take on tobacco road rival No. 3 North Carolina on Wednesday, April 6 in Chapel Hill, N.C. Following the match against the Tar Heels, the Blue Devils will return home to take on No. 12 Clemson and No. 11 Georgia Tech.
