DURHAM, N.C. - The third-ranked Duke women's tennis team defeated Indiana 6-1 Sunday afternoon in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. Duke improved to 6-0 on the season in doubles play with three victories, and 11-1 in singles play after notching wins in five of its six singles matches.
The afternoon began with doubles action, as freshman Beatrice Capra and sophomore Rachel Kahan picked up an 8-2 victory over Kayla Fujimoto and Evgeniya Vertesheva in the No. 1 doubles spot. The Blue Devil tandem picked up its second doubles win in three days after winning in the No. 2 spot Friday evening against William & Mary.
In the No. 2 doubles spot, junior Mary Clayton and freshman Ester Goldfeld found themselves locked in a back-and-forth battle against Carolyn Chupa and and Katie Klyczek. After sharing games and the score tied at four apiece, the Hoosiers jumped out to a 6-4 lead. The Blue Devils fought back, overcame the deficit and won the final four games to claim an 8-6 victory and clinch the doubles point.
Sophomore Hanna Mar and senior Monica Gorny teamed up in the No. 3 spot, where faced Leslie Hureau and Alecia Kauss. Mar and Gorny grabbed an early 2-0 lead, but Indiana's pair replied, winning the next four games for a 4-2 lead of their own. Duke rallied back to tie the match at 5-5, and went on to win the final three games to claim an 8-5 win.
In singles play, the seventh-ranked Capra took down Hureau, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 1 spot, while 38th-ranked Hanna Mar, playing in the No. 2 spot, ousted Vertesheva, 6-2, 6-2, to clinch the overall match for the Blue Devils.
Goldfeld, playing in the No. 3 spot, won the first set of her match against the 79th-ranked Chupa, 6-2, before Chupa retired due to injury while leading Goldfeld 4-3 in the second set.
In the No. 4 spot, Kahan, ranked 117th, downed Klyczek, 6-1, 6-2, while the 66th-ranked Clayton defeated Kauss, 6-1, 6-1, from the No. 5 spot.
Freshman Annie Mulholland, ranked 97th and making her dual match debut in the No. 6 spot, won a tough first set 7-5 over Fujimoto, before dropping the second set by the same count. Fujimoto won a hard-fought tie-breaker, 10-8, to pick up Indiana's only victory on the afternoon.
"I thought we served better today," said head coach Jamie Ashworth of the team's performance in its singles matches. "It needs to be better, but I thought we improved on that. We valued our service games a little bit more. I thought we didn't let people back into games and matches - that was definitely good to see."
The Blue Devils will remain at home to take on the College of Charleston at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27, in its first match as part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Blue Devils will then host either Illinois or Winthrop on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. All matches will be played in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
