Bencomo, a 2011 NCAA quarterfinalist, had a strong opening weekend to the season as he took home runner-up honors at the Hokie Open. The Phoenix native posted a major decision and 6-2 and 3-1 decisions to earn a spot in the title bout. Up against top-seeded and current No. 13 Dan Rinaldi of Rutgers in the final, Bencomo lost the hard-fought battle 3-2. The runner-up finish was Bencomo's highest finish at the Hokie Open in his career.
The redshirt junior enters his final campaign at Duke as the 2011 ACC runner-up at 184 pounds. He advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals that season, becoming just the second Blue Devil to do so in program history. For his career, Bencomo is 60-31.
Duke is back in action Nov. 11 at the Michigan State Open.
