Sophomore Steven Gasparini, graduate student Piotr Safronczyk, senior Ben Tuben and junior Ben Hwang combined for a second-place showing in the 200 medley relay, breaking the program record set at last year's ACC Championships by over a second with a 1:26.46 clocking. The Blue Devils touched just .12 seconds behind first-place Virginia Tech while earning a spot on the podium in the event for the first time in program history and surpassing the NCAA provisional standard for the second time this season.
In the 800 free relay, the team of junior Ted Minturn, senior Hunter Roux, sophomore Tyler Fleming and junior Matt Carder touched in a season-best time of 6:38.49 to finish eighth overall. The Blue Devils' time was good for an NCAA 'B' cut, their first of the season in the event. In addition, Minturn posted a 1:39.21 split out of the leadoff position for a new personal best and Duke's top mark of the season in the 200 free.
"I'm very proud of the Duke men and their performances on the first night," said head coach Dan Colella. "Everybody who swam tonight had personal-best splits and we hope this is just a great omen for the things to come the rest of the weekend."
The Blue Devils are currently tied for fourth in the team standings with NC State and Florida State, scoring 56 points through the first two events of the meet. Virginia Tech leads the field with 68 points, followed by North Carolina (66) and Virginia (58).
The ACC Championships continue Thursday with prelims slated for 11 a.m. and finals at 7 p.m. The schedule of events includes the 500 free, 200 IM and the 50 free, as well as the 200 free relay.
