In the first NCAA Championships appearance of his career, Tuben tapped the wall in a personal-best time of 20.11 during the preliminaries. That performance was good for 48th place overall, an impressive 22-spot jump from his 73rd-place seeding heading into the event.
Tuben will return to the pool on Friday for the preliminaries of the 100 butterfly. The Fairfax, Va., native notched the 13th-best time in the nation in the 100 butterfly with a school-record breaking time of 46.69 at the Ohio State Last Chance Qualifier. Tuben took fifth overall at last month's Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, recording a time of 47.38.
Graduate student Piotr Safronczyk will see his first action of the NCAA Championships on Friday, as he is slated to compete in the 100 breaststroke. The 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference champion and program record holder in the event, Safronczyk owns the 11th-best time in the nation at the 100-yard distance with a mark of 52.99.
