CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Duke's success at the 2014 USTA/ITA Regional Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C., continued Friday, as the Blue Devils advanced a doubles team to the quarterfinal round of the doubles main draw and four singles players to the round of 32 in the singles main draw.
In doubles, Duke's pair of senior Ester Goldfeld and sophomore Alyssa Smith cruised in its round of 16 match against NC State's Liza Fieldsend and Sophie Nelson, earning an 8-1 victory and advancing to the quarterfinal round of the doubles main draw. Goldfeld and Smith return to doubles action Saturday at 8:30 a.m., facing South Carolina's Natalie Looney and Xiemna Siles.
The duke tandem of redshirt senior Rachel Kahan and freshman Rebecca Smaller dropped its first doubles match of the season, 8-7 (6), against South Carolina's Hadley Berg and Elixane Lechemia. With the loss, the Blue Devil pair now owns a doubles record of 6-1 this season.
Goldfeld carried her momentum from doubles into her singles match against Maggie Kane of North Carolina Friday morning, earning a convincing 6-0, 6-0 victory. Goldfeld moved to 3-4 on the season with the win. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native is slated to meet Karen Forman of Wake Forest at 10 a.m., Saturday.
In addition to Goldfeld, Smaller also moved on to the round of 32 in the singles main draw, defeating Wake Forest's Luisa Fernandez, 6-0, 6-2. Smaller's win over Fernandez was the fifth of the season for the London native.
Both Smith and Kahan required three sets to earn victories on their respective courts, but each advanced to the round of 32, as well. Smith posted a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Clare Cox of Appalachian State, while Kahan earned a 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 victory over Hadley Berg of South Carolina. Smith enters Saturday's competition with a 3-3 singles record this fall, and Kahan improved to 5-4 with her win Friday.
Senior Annie Mulholland put in a valiant effort against North Carolina's Casandra Vasquez, but ultimately fell in the opening round match. After dropping the first set, 6-3, Mulholland rebounded and took the second set 6-4. Although Mulholland jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third set, she was unable to hold off Vasquez, who settled in and won the third set, 6-3. Mulholland's singles record moved to 3-2 this season following the match.
Doubles play opens Saturday's competition, with the first matches scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Updated draws are available here.
