CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team's strong play continued in the third day of play at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C., as a doubles team advanced to the semifinal round of the doubles main draw and three singles players reached the quarterfinal round of the singles main draw.
Senior Ester Goldfeld and sophomore Alyssa Smith won their third doubles match of the tournament Saturday morning, defeating Natalie Looney and Ximena Siles of South Carolina, 8-5. With the win, Goldfeld and Smith improved to 3-1 on the season. The Duke pair is scheduled to face Ashley Dai and Kate Vialle of North Carolina Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
Goldfeld once again maintained the momentum from doubles and carried it over into singles play, winning both of her singles matches to advance to the quarterfinal round. Goldfeld opened Saturday's singles action with a convincing 6-0, 6-4, win over Wake Forest's Karen Forman, before returning to the courts and defeating North Carolina's Kate Vialle, 6-3, 6-3 in a round of 16 match. Goldfeld, now 5-4 this fall, is scheduled to face South Carolina's Elixane Lechemia Sunday at 9:45 a.m.
Redshirt senior Rachel Kahan opened singles play Saturday with her sixth win of the season after defeating Kimmy Guerin of Wake Forest, 6-3, 6-2, in a round of 32 contest. The Unionville, Conn., native returned to competition in a round of 16 match, upending Jessy Rompies of Clemson, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4, to earn her seventh win of the season and move her overall record to 7-4.
Freshman Rebecca Smaller also posted a 2-0 record on the day, advancing to the quarterfinal round of the singles draw. The London native reached the round of 16 with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over South Carolina's Brigit Folland. Smaller's second match of the day went two sets, as she earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over North Carolina's Ashley Dai. Smaller, who is 7-4 this season, is set to face Beatrice Gumulya at 8:30 a.m. in a quarterfinal match.
After dropping a set early in her first match of the day, sophomore Alyssa Smith rebounded nicely to defeat NC State's Liza Fieldsend, 1-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4 in a round of 32 match. Smith dropped her second match of the day however, falling to Clemson's Beatrice Gumulya, 6-0, 6-2. Smith concludes competition this weekend with a 4-4 record for the fall.
