DURHAM, N.C.—With awards season well underway for fall sports, Duke men's soccer senior Sean Davis continues to be among the select few student-athletes reaping postseason honors. The two-year Blue Devil captain recently was recognized for his outstanding athletic and academic accomplishments in 2014, earning Capital One Academic All-America first team accolades.
Davis is the fourth Duke men's soccer player and 34th Blue Devil overall to capture Academic All-America first team honors in his career. Overall, four Blue Devils have won five first team awards since 2008 as he joins Josh Bienenfeld, Andrew Wenger and Christopher Tweed-Kent on the short list. Davis is one of three ACC players to garner first team recognition.
The 2014 ACC Men's Soccer Midfielder of the Year, Davis was the engine to Duke's offense this year and throughout his career. The Holmdel, N.J., native finished his season leading All ACC players and ranking third nationally with a career-high 10 assists.
Davis, recently tabbed the nation's No. 5 player by Top Drawer Soccer, completed his senior campaign with 12 points to rank second on the team in scoring. He tallied a career-high three assists in Duke's 8-2 win over Stetson and provided assists in seven games overall for the Blue Devils.
A three-time All-ACC honoree, the Holmdel, N.J., native was picked as the ACC Player of the Week after leading Duke to 2-1 win over then-No. 1 North Carolina with the equalizing goal and game-winning assist. For his career, Davis has started 62 of 64 games and scored seven goals and 17 assists for 31 points.
Off the field, Davis is a sociology major who will graduate in December with his Bachelor of Arts degree. He has garnered All-ACC Academic Team in each of the previous two seasons and is a three-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll. He was voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV first team the past two year and was awarded a Top 6 for Service Award last spring for his work in both the Duke and Durham communities.
A candidate to be a top 10 choice in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft, Davis will see where his soccer future lies in the coming months. The draft is set to be held Jan. 15, 2015 in Philadelphia.
