DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team opened the first day of the Kitty Harrison Invitational Friday afternoon with doubles matches against Maryland, Virginia and Penn State, and singles action against South Carolina. This season, Duke's Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center serves as a satellite site for the invite, which runs in a hidden-dual format and occurs over a three-day span.
The Blue Devils opened the day with doubles action against Penn State. The Duke team of seniors Annie Mulholland and Ester Goldfeld, competing together for the first time this season, earned a convincing 8-2 victory over Penn State's team of Taylor Shukow and Liyin Xu. The tandem of junior Beatrice Capra and freshman Samantha Harris, also paired for the first time this season, opened the day with an 8-2 win of their own, defeating Penn State's Katia Blik and Katherine Whiteaway.
Doubles play continued as Duke faced pairs from Virginia and Maryland. Goldfeld and Mulholland posted their second win of the day, defeating Maryland's Alexandra Stanova and Olivia Gaudreault, 8-5. Sophomore Alyssa Smith and freshman Christina Makarova, also competing together for the first time this season, defeated Maryland's Nataliya Brediskhina and Ekaterina Tour, 8-7. The tandem of Capra and Harris rounded out Duke's first day of doubles, falling to Virginia's Maci Epstein and Marie Faure, 8-5.
In singles action, Goldfeld notched her seventh win of the season, defeating South Carolina's Caroline Dailey, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0. The remaining three Duke competitors, including Mulholland, Smith and Makarova, were unable to earn victories in their respective singles matches.
Makarova, appearing in the first singles match of her college career, forced a third-set tiebreak but was unable to defeat South Carolina's Ximena Silas Luna, falling 3-6, 6-3, 1-0.
Both Mulholland and Smith fell in straight sets to their respective opponents Friday afternoon. Mulholland dropped her match against Brigit Folland, 6-3, 6-4, while Smith suffered a 7-6, 6-3 defeat to Meghan Blevins.
Duke resumes play at the Kitty Harrison Invitational tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. with doubles against South Carolina. Due to the men's basketball exhibition game against Central Missouri, fans are required to pay $10 to park in the Blue Zone lot. Admission to all matches, held in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center, is free to the public.
