DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke women's tennis team resumed competition at the Kitty Harrison Invitational Saturday morning, with doubles matches against South Carolina and singles contests against Wake Forest. Duke's matches on Saturday were held in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center, as the Blue Devils serve as a satellite site for the invitational.
The Blue Devils opened the day by splitting doubles against South Carolina. Junior Beatrice Capra and senior Ester Goldfeld, competing as a pair for the first time this season, defeated Meghan Blevins and Hadley Berg, 8-4, while sophomore Alyssa Smith and senior Annie Mulholland, also competing as a doubles team for the first time this fall, fell to Brigit Folland and Caroline Dailey, 8-4.
In singles, Duke posted a record of 3-1 against Wake Forest. Freshman Christina Makarova earned the first singles win of her college career with a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 victory over Sam Asch. Makarova now owns a collegiate singles record of 1-1.
Goldfeld remained undefeated in singles this weekend with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Xue Zhang. Goldfeld's victory moved the Brooklyn, N.Y., native to 8-5 this fall.
Mulholland also earned the win against her opponent, improving to 4-3 in singles play this season after outlasting Kasey Gardiner, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0.
Smith, competing in her 10th singles match of the fall season, dropped her contest with Kimmy Guerin, 6-2, 6-4. With the loss, Smith fell to 4-6.
The final day of the Kitty Harrison Invitational begins at 9 a.m. at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. Admission and parking for Sunday's matches are free to all spectators. Fans attending the match can park in the Blue Zone lot by entering from Duke University Road.
