Naples, Fla. -- Duke women's tennis head coach Jamie Ashworth received his 2014 Wilson/ITA National Women's Coach of the Year award Sunday evening at the 30th annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Coaches Convention, held in Naples, Fla. The national coach of the year recognition was the first of Ashworth's career.
“Receiving this award is definitely a privilege and honor, especially when it is awarded by your peers,” Ashworth said. “Anytime you receive something like this, it is more an award for the players and those around your program, rather than an individual honor. We have been fortunate here at Duke to have had some great players and great people to work with that have allowed us to be successful. I am truly thankful to all of those that are a part of the Duke Tennis program.”
Ashworth, entering his 19th season at Duke, helped guide the Blue Devils to the quarterfinal round of last season's NCAA Team Championship, marking the eighth time in program history Duke advanced beyond the round of 16. Duke rebounded from an injury-plagued 2012-13 season by sitting atop the ITA rankings nine weeks throughout the season, including five straight. One of the many season highlights included the Blue Devils claiming the National Team Indoor Championship, defeating eventual NCAA Champion UCLA in a thrilling 4-3 contest. Ashworth earned his 400th career win at Duke earlier in 2014 as well, and owns an ACC-leading 410-98 (.807) overall record.
The ITA's coach of the year honor not only recognizes the athletic accomplishments of student-athletes that compete, but also academic achievements. Last season, members of the Duke women's tennis team boasted a 3.56 grade point average. The Blue Devils also participated in a variety of community service projects throughout the year.
Duke begins 2015 play in Hawaii, with the team's first match of the new year scheduled for Jan. 8.
