CARY, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team resumed competition Saturday at the Duke Fab Four Invitational, with five singles players advancing deep into their respective draws.
After falling in the first round of singles play yesterday, sophomore Alyssa Smith rebounded nicely Saturday, posting two victories and advancing to the consolation final of the blue draw. Smith remained undefeated during the second day of competition with a 7-6 (3), 5-7, 1-0 (4) victory over Zalina Khairudinova of Ole Miss in the consolation quarterfinals and a 6-2, 6-1 win in the consolation semifinals over Furman's Blair Martin. Smith is scheduled to face Alabama's Maya Jansen Sunday morning.
Duke's 12th-ranked Ester Goldfeld kick started Saturday's competition by outlasting Oklahoma State's Katarina Adamovic, 6-4, 7-5, before falling to Florida's 89th-ranked Belinda Woolcock, 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinal round of the white draw. Goldfeld concludes competition at the tournament tomorrow morning with a third-place match against Florida's Josie Kuhlman.
Redshirt senior Rachel Kahan, also competing in the white draw, was unable to advance beyond the quarterfinal round of the draw before falling to Kuhlman, 6-1, 7-5. With the loss, Kahan fell to the fifth-place bracket, where she was upended by Miami's Sinead Lohan, 6-0, 6-4. Kahan closes the Duke Fab Four Invitational with a seventh-place match against Oklahoma State's Katarina Adamovic Sunday morning.
Competing in her first collegiate tennis tournament, freshman Samantha Harris reached the semifinal round of the black draw with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over 37th-ranked Kelsey Laurente of Oklahoma State. Harris met Florida's 14th-ranked Brianna Morgan in the semifinal round, winning the first set 6-3, before Morgan won the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-0, moving Harris to the third-place match against North Carolina's 35th-ranked Caroline Price.
Fellow freshman Rebecca Smaller, also competing in her first collegiate tournament, put in a valiant effort against Florida's Spencer Liang, however she was unable to earn the victory, suffering a 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (6) setback to Liang, dropping Smaller to the 15th-place match scheduled for tomorrow morning against Furman's Karlee Bryde.
The final day of competition at the Duke Fab Four Invitational begins Sunday morning at 9 a.m. with doubles, followed by the final round of singles play.
