RALEIGH, N.C. – The Duke Blue Devils (5-4-0, 2-0-0) established an aggressive tone early as they took the 1-0 decision over NC State (2-5-2, 0-2-0) Thursday night at Dail Soccer Field in Raleigh, N.C. It was the Blue Devils third consecutive victory and shutout.
Sophomore
Toni Payne attacking from the left side was a common sight throughout the match. Payne probed the NC State defense and found sophomore
Rebecca Quinn with a cross just under 14 minutes into the match. Quinn, who hails from Toronto, Canada, took the nice assist to the far post, giving the Blue Devils the 1-0 early lead. It was Quinn's second goal of the season and Payne's team-leading fourth assist.
”I thought the game went great,” head coach
Robbie Church said. “We played really well in the first half. It was a big-time goal and patience from Toni to let Rebecca develop the run and see the seam. She got in there and finished with composure.”
Duke kept the pressure on the Wolfpack defense all night, outshooting NC State 16-2 in the first half and 24-6 overall. The offense featured a balanced attack, as 13 different Blue Devils recorded a shot on the night. Payne and senior
Kelly Cobb led the way with five and four shots, respectively.
“When we have the ball, we're all attackers. We're all forwards,” Church said. “When we don't have the ball, we have to become all defenders.”
The Duke defense played a strong role in allowing the offense to attack early and often, holding NC State without a shot on goal for most of the match. Attacking late in the second half, the Wolfpack fired a shot that bounced off the crossbar and resulted in a rebound shot for NC State.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper
Ali Kershner came up big with her only save of the game, deflecting the shot to keep NC State off the board and seal the victory for the Blue Devils. A native of Palo Alto, Calif., Kershner netted her third shutout of the season and hasn't allowed a goal over the last 225 minutes.
Duke posted its 14th straight victory over the Wolfpack and the Blue Devils haven't allowed a goal against NC State over the last 11 matches.
The Blue Devils will travel to Blacksburg, Va., to battle Virginia Tech Sunday, Sept. 28 at 5 p.m.
