DURHAM, N.C.—The play might not have been quite as quick and the passes might not have been as accurate, but the laughter and memories shared were greater than ever as nearly 70 former Blue Devils returned to Durham for the fourth annual Alumni Weekend event.
The current Blue Devils went up against the recent alums, including MLL Offensive Player of the Year Jordan Wolf. Duke's current squad proved to be too much for the collection of All-Americans and NCAA Champions.
It was a balanced effort from both squads in the first game with former Dukies Jordan Wolf, Jake Tripucka, Charlie Payton and Greg DeLuca scoring two apiece. However, the faceoff game was not friendly to the alumni squad, going 14-of-38 at the X.
Myles Jones and Jack Bruckner both had four apiece for the current Blue Devils and Kyle Rowe won 15-of-19 faceoffs.
In the legends game, the scoring came less often with the Blue squad winning 5-4. Peter Rubin paced the winning team with a pair of tallies, while Jon Bierman added two for White. Matthew Breuer and William McCullough both had five saves apiece in the 40 minutes of action.
While many of the highlights and great moments came on the sidelines as former teammates reunited, one moment stood as a new tradition was formed. A collection of former players, self-named the Gray Devils, presented Duke lacrosse with a large donation. The Gray Devils were formed this summer and joined forces at Lake Placid and plan on making it an annual tradition.
