DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke women's tennis team makes the short trip to Chapel Hill, N.C., today to begin competition at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships. The five-day tournament, running from Thursday, Oct. 22, through Monday, Oct. 26, begins with the qualifying singles draw Thursday morning and the doubles main draw Thursday afternoon. The matches are scheduled to occur at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Duke sends a contingent of eight competitors to Chapel Hill, including senior Beatrice Capra, juniors Chalena Scholl and Alyssa Smith, sophomores Samantha Harris and Rebecca Smaller and freshmen Ellyse Hamlin, Jessica Ho and Kaitlyn McCarthy.
Duke opens the tournament with doubles action, as the tandem of Capra and Hamlin are scheduled to take on the winner of the match between NC State's Tayla Stenta and Taylor Zaytoun and Clemson's Fernanda Navarro and Daniella Ruiz at 4 p.m. The tandem of Capra and Hamlin owns a team-high eight wins this year, earning eight straight victories to open the 2015 fall season.
The duo of Smaller and Smith also received a bye in the opening round, and are set to take on either Barbara Mancera and Amanda Rebol of NC State or Ansley Speaks and Kathy Weymouth of Furman at 4 p.m. Smaller and Smith last competed together at the Duke James Bonk Invite, earning an 8-5 win over NC State's Joanna Nalborska and Bianca Moldovan.
Ho and Scholl, carrying a perfect 3-0 doubles record into this weekend's competition, will face the winner of the match between Winthrop's Alice Garcia and Lauren Proctor and South Carolina's Megen Cochran and Ali Mills at 4 p.m.
Harris and McCarthy comprise the final Duke duo set to compete Thursday, with the pair scheduled to face the victor of the match between Ana Ortiz and Ew Telenga of Campbell and Paige Cline and Rachel Rohrabacher of South Carolina. The pair of Harris and McCarthy also owns a perfect 3-0 record this season.
All of Duke's singles competitors are set to compete in the singles main draw, which begins Friday morning.
