CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Three Duke doubles tandems remained perfect Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships held in Chapel Hill, N.C. Each Duke doubles team is slated to resume play Friday morning at 9 a.m. in round of 16 action.
Junior Alyssa Smith and freshman Rebecca Smaller earned two victories to begin play in Chapel Hill. Smith and Smaller defeated UNC-Greensboro's tandem of Masey Demoss and Jamie Grinberg, 8-1, in the first round of the tournament, before returning to the courts and defeating Appalachian State's Mackenzie LaSure and Melissa Machado, 8-3. Smith and Smaller are slated to face the Wake Forest duo of Kasey Gardiner and Kimmy Guerin in their round of 16 contest.
The Duke pair of junior Chalena Scholl and freshman Jessica Ho also advanced to the round of 16. After receiving a bye in the opening round, the Duke duo convincingly defeated NC State's Tayla Stenta and Taylor Zaytoun, 8-1. Scholl and Ho, currently sitting at 4-0 on the season, are next set to take on Wake Forest's Luisa Fernandez and Andrea Retolaza.
The tandem of senior Beatrice Capra and freshman Ellyse Hamlin improved to 9-1 on the year after opening the weekend of competition with an 8-4 win over Emma Davis and Anna Ulyashchenko of Wake Forest. The Duke duo is scheduled to compete against Clemson's team of Joana Eidukonyte and Theresa Pointek tomorrow morning.
In addition to the continuation of doubles, the main draw of singles action is also scheduled to begin Friday, with six Blue Devils opening play in the round of 64.
Smaller is slated to face Annika Sillanpaa of UNC-Wilmington at 1 p.m., while Scholl's singles match with Elon's Erica Braschi is scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. start. Capra takes the singles court tomorrow as well, facing Ally Miller Krasilnikov of Clemson at 10:30 a.m.
In the bottom half of the main singles draw, Hamlin takes the court against South Carolina's Paige Cline at 10:30 a.m., while Smith takes on Furman's Ansley Speaks at 11 a.m. and Ho competes against Stenta at 10:15 a.m.
