CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Duke women's tennis team resumed play at the USTA/ITA Regional Championship in Chapel Hill, N.C., Friday, with the doubles pair of junior Alyssa Smith and sophomore Rebecca Smaller advancing in the main doubles draw of the tournament. Four Blue Devils also reached the round of 32 in the main singles draw.
Duke opened the day with doubles action. Smith and Smaller outlasted the Wake Forest pair of Kasey Gardiner and Kimmy Guerin, 8-7 (3). The Duke doubles team moved to 4-2 on the season with the victory and carry a four-match win streak into a quarterfinal match against South Carolina's Ingrid Martins and Ellie Zogg, which is slated for a 9 a.m. start Saturday.
After opening the tournament with an 8-1 win over NC State's Tayla Stenta and Taylor Zaytoun yesterday, the duo of freshman Jessica Ho and junior Chalena Scholl suffered an 8-3 loss against Wake Forest's Luisa Fernandez and Andrea Retolaza in a round of 16 contest. Friday's result marks the first loss of the 2015 fall season for the Duke pair.
Senior Beatrice Capra and freshman Ellyse Hamlin also fell in their round of 16 doubles match Friday, as Joana Eidukonyte and Theresa Pointek of Clemson earned the 8-2 win. With the loss, the pair of Capra and Hamlin own a record of 9-2 this season.
Ho returned to the courts for singles action, playing in the bottom half of the main singles draw. Ho downed her round of 64 opponent, Stenta, 6-0, 6-2, to advance to the round of 32 before falling to North Carolina's Chloe Ouellet-Pizer in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Ho currently owns a singles record of 4-2 this season.
Junior Alyssa Smith also posted a singles win to begin main draw play. The Laguna Niguel, Calif., native defeated Ansley Speaks of Furman in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, to reach the round of 32. Smith is next scheduled to face Alice Garcia of Winthrop Saturday at 10:15 a.m.
Sophomore Rebecca Smaller registered a singles victory as well Friday, recording a 6-4, 6-0 win over UNC-Wilmington's Annika Sillanpaa. Smaller was unable to carry the momentum over in her second singles match of the day however, falling to top-seeded Hayley Carter of North Carolina, 6-3, 6-2. The win over Sillanpaa earlier in the day marks the first singles victory of the year for Smaller.
Scholl, a junior out of Pompano Beach, Fla., split her singles matches Friday, defeating Elon's Erica Braschi 6-4, 6-4. In her second singles match of the day, Scholl battled back from a first-set deficit to force a third set against Wake Forest's Emma Davis, but ultimately suffered a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 loss. Scholl's singles record sits at 2-2 with Friday's results.
