CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team's run at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C., came to an end Saturday following the play of one Blue Devil doubles pair and a singles competitor.
Duke's duo of junior Alyssa Smith and sophomore Rebecca Smaller fell to South Carolina's Ingrid Martins and Ellie Zogg, 8-6, in the quarterfinal round of doubles play Saturday. With a 2-1 record throughout the event, Smith and Smaller moved to 3-3 on the year while competing as a doubles team.
Smith returned to the courts later in the morning, facing Alice Garcia of Winthrop in a round of 32 match. The Laguna Niguel, Calif., native was unable to earn the victory to move on to the round of 16, suffering a 6-2, 7-5 loss to Garcia.
